Microneedling is one of the most misunderstood treatments in aesthetic dermatology. It is marketed as a miracle and dismissed as "just small needles" — neither is quite right. Here is what it actually is, and what you should expect if you book a session.
What microneedling actually does
Microneedling uses a device with very fine, sterile needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin — typically to a depth of 0.5 to 2.5 mm depending on the concern being treated. These tiny channels trigger the skin's wound-healing response, which stimulates collagen and elastin production over the following weeks.
That is the mechanism in one paragraph. No lasers, no heat, no shortcut. Just a mechanical prompt to your skin to do what it already knows how to do — rebuild itself.
Who it suits
Microneedling has a wider use-case than most treatments we offer. We commonly recommend it for:
- Acne scars and chickenpox scars — especially the rolling, shallow variety
- Fine lines and early textural ageing
- Enlarged pores and overall skin texture
- Stretch marks, particularly newer ones
- Dull, lacklustre skin in need of a collagen prompt
It is not the right tool for active acne breakouts, severe rosacea, keloid-prone skin, or during pregnancy. Your consultation will screen for these.
A realistic session plan
Here is a difficult truth: one session will not transform your skin. Collagen remodelling takes time. Most patients see measurable results over a course of 4–6 sessions, spaced 4–6 weeks apart. For acne scarring, we often recommend 6–8 sessions.
Results continue to evolve for up to six months after the final session — which is why we caution patients against "just one before the wedding". The timing matters.
A consultation will tell you whether it's the right tool for your concern, or whether something else would serve you better.
What the session feels like
We apply a topical numbing cream 30–45 minutes before the procedure, which does most of the work. During treatment, sensation ranges from a faint scratching to a vibration — uncomfortable on the forehead and around the nose, easily tolerable elsewhere. The procedure itself takes 20–30 minutes.
At VRAJ, we often pair microneedling with a topical serum — growth factors, hyaluronic acid, or a peptide complex — chosen for your concern. The micro-channels allow far better penetration for 30–45 minutes after the session.
The first 72 hours
Immediately after: you will look as if you have a strong sunburn. Red, warm, slightly tight. This settles significantly by the next morning.
Day 1–2: redness fades to a pink flush. Skin may feel dry and slightly sensitive. A gentle cleanser and a barrier-repair moisturiser are all you need.
Day 3–5: some patients experience light flaking — this is healthy and should not be picked at. Makeup can typically be resumed after 48 hours.
Across all of this: strict sun protection is non-negotiable. Microneedled skin is temporarily photosensitive, and pigmentation is a genuine risk if you ignore this for the two weeks after treatment.
What we won't promise
We cannot erase deep ice-pick scars with microneedling alone — they often respond better to TCA CROSS or fractional CO₂. We cannot undo a decade of sun damage in three sessions. We will never claim you will look "ten years younger".
What we can promise is an honest conversation about whether microneedling is the right tool for your specific skin, and a protocol that is realistic about time and outcome. That is the boundary between medicine and marketing — and it is one we draw carefully.
